How did you become an acupuncturist?
I decided to switch to acupuncture after a few years in music school because I wanted to help people the way my acupuncturist helped me. As a teenager, I had many health concerns that were all alleviated through traditional Chinese medicine. I appreciated how my acupuncturist saw me as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms to fix. My healing experiences inspired me to study acupuncture, which I found deeply fulfilling. With the guidance of experienced mentors, I developed the ability and tools to provide holistic treatments that address both the root issues and their manifestations.
You play music! Tell us about how music has played a role in your life.
Music has been a huge part of my life. Whether playing alone, with friends, in orchestras, or going to concerts, it's been essential for finding balance, being creative, and letting go of perfectionism by living in the moment. I play several instruments, mainly cello and guitar, and I've been teaching myself drums lately, which has been a really fun challenge.
Your doctoral research was on PCOS. How did you come to that specialty and what do you love about it?
I chose to specialize in PCOS because I was surprised by how common it is and how few treatment options are out there. Many people get frustrated with Western medicine pushing birth control or weight loss, which don't really tackle the root issue. Providing effective care is incredibly fulfilling and each success story strengthens my dedication to keep learning about reproductive health. In addition, building long-term relationships with my patients and witnessing their progress over time is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Seeing the positive changes inspires me to continue advocating for better awareness and treatment options for people with PCOS.
Tell us about your training in Japan, including Facial Rejuvenation acupuncture.
During my time in acupuncture school, I had the opportunity to travel to Shikoku, Japan, to train in facial rejuvenation acupuncture. It was a deeply enriching experience where I learned so much. What I found most valuable about the techniques taught was how incredibly gentle they were, yet the results they yielded were remarkable. Beyond the training, traveling around Japan was an incredible experience. I enjoyed exploring the different cities and eating amazing food. The whole experience was not only professionally rewarding but also personally unforgettable.
What is your favorite acupuncture point?
Lung 9. I really like this description of the meaning of Lung 9 and don’t feel like I could word it any better.
LU 9: Very Great Abyss
An abyss is a deep and seemingly bottomless chasm. When a patient's Metal, particularly the lung official, has been traumatized, they can perceive themselves in a deep, dark place from which no escape seems possible. There is little possibility of perceiving light, love, or freedom. They are as if covered in unworthiness, regret, and remorse, unable to see a better future ahead.
LU 9 pulls the patient out of the abyss. It is the Earth point, bringing qualities of nurturing and grounding. Thus, the newly freed patient comes back into the clarity and richness of life without shock or additional trauma, but with stability and balance.

How do you use East Asian medicine in your daily life?
East Asian Medicine plays a significant role in my daily life beyond just acupuncture. I live according to its principles in my daily routines, such as practicing qigong, eating according to my own body's constitution, and taking herbal formulas when needed. Aligning my lifestyle with the seasons helps me feel more in sync with nature's rhythms, promoting more flow in my own life. These practices not only enhance my physical health but also cultivate a deeper connection with my body and surroundings.
What is your favorite Oakland place?
My favorite place in Oakland is walking around Joaquin Miller Park with my dog, Ivy. I love recharging surrounded by the tall trees and breathing in the fresh air before coming back to my daily life.
